Take your artwork to a new level by adding movement. In this at-home camp module you will learn how to use cams, levers, the wind and your own muscle power to bring your artwork to life. All techniques used will be mechanical, but many can be adapted to be driven by motors. We’ll start simple and work up to a multi-faceted automaton of your own design. Campers will have the opportunity to get personal feedback from instructors and their campmates throughout the week. At the end of the week we will create a video gallery of campers’ work.
A typical “camp day” begins at 9 a.m. with a 30-minute online session with the professional instructor introducing new ideas and techniques. This session will be recorded for campers who cannot be there right at 9 or who would like to take two modules per week. After the opening lesson, campers are then free to work on their own or get help from classmates or our NIU student assistant in a secure video chat area. Twice during the day, the instructor sets aside 30 minutes of online video office hours for campers needing help or wanting to show their project. Campers upload a short video of their daily work.
This camp is recommended for students in grades 3-6, but it’s accessible to both older and younger students using included support material.
